Flashpoint finale attracts 2.1 million viewers
The Fall TV season is wrapping up as
Thursday marked the end of the hit Canadian series Flashpoint. The
series finale of the popular police drama was seen by 2.1 million
viewers according to a CTV press release:
Toronto, ON (December 14, 2012) – CTV’s trailblazing hit Original Drama FLASHPOINT came to a conclusion with its biggest audience ever last night: a series-high 2.1 million viewers. Closing out the final season with an average audience of 1.8 million viewers, last night’s emotional and historic finale propelled the Canadian series to a final 10 p.m. timeslot win in total viewers and all key demos over its simulcast American competition, and making it the most-watched broadcast of a Canadian series in 18 months.* Overall, 12.5 million Canadians watched FLASHPOINT in its fifth and final season.
Market index shows Calgary, Edmonton being the most competitive radio markets
Earlier this week, we looked at the
share in hours of each media company in the largest markets in
Canada. Using those same share totals, we can figure out how
concentrated or competitive the Canadian radio markets are.
In each city or market, the
shares of all media companies, not the stations themselves, like
Astral, Bell, CBC, Corus, and Rogers are added. One would expect the
result to be 100%. However, this isn't the case since
community/campus radio stations don't participate in the studies and
neither do ones from other markets that happen to be picked up. (As a
reminder, the share is calculated by taking the the number of hours
tuned to a particular station, or in this case the media company, and
dividing it by the total number of hours listened to the radio.) So,
the problem with using the share values from the BBM data is that we
also have to include the other radio stations that help sum all the
shares to 100% and we don't have that information.

Radio Owners' Share in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal (Fall 2012)
With BBM topline data, we can do more than just calculate the changes in listeners or market share of each radio station over a year. One thing we can do with the data is to compare how each media company fares in the large markets. So, let's take a look at these large markets of Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Montreal.
In the Toronto market, Rogers is in the lead with a share of 28% thanks to the popularity of CHFI and 680News. The Fan 590 is Rogers' lowest rating station, but its share is 3.4%.
The under-performing TSN Radio (0.4) and the low listenership of Urban music station FLOW 93.5 are keeping Bell Media far away from Rogers and Astral in the ratings game.
In the Toronto market, Rogers is in the lead with a share of 28% thanks to the popularity of CHFI and 680News. The Fan 590 is Rogers' lowest rating station, but its share is 3.4%.

The FAN 590 daytime shows see ratings boost
If you have seen the most recent radio ratings in Toronto, you may have noticed that Sportsnet 590 The Fan maintained their share of 3.4% from the summer into the fall, despite the on-going NHL lockout. The Rogers owned sports station noticed as well, providing a press release with some tidbits on how their programs fared:
The increase in share of hours for these programs are impressive, especially in a very competitive radio market. Hockey starved fans are looking for any kind of lockout news and Hockey Central @ Noon seems to have unexpectedly benefited from this labour dispute.
Each daytime show on Sportsnet 590 The FAN experienced double-digit growth for the R4 period year-over-year:
· Brady and Lang in the Morning (5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. ET) – increased share of hours tuned to 6.8 share from 6.2 (10% increase)
· The Jeff Blair Show (9 a.m. to Noon ET) – increased share of hours tuned to 6.5 share from 4.2 (55% increase)
· Hockey Central @ Noon (Noon to 1 p.m. ET) – even in the midst of the NHL lockout, increased share of hours tuned to 7.9 share from 5.3 (49% increase)
· Tim & Sid (1 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET) – increased share of hours tuned to 8.2 share from 5.0 (64% increase)
· Prime Time Sports with Bob McCown (4 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET) – Canada’s most-listened to sports afternoon drive show in Toronto increased listenership to 11.6 share from 9.6 (21% increase)

The increase in share of hours for these programs are impressive, especially in a very competitive radio market. Hockey starved fans are looking for any kind of lockout news and Hockey Central @ Noon seems to have unexpectedly benefited from this labour dispute.

More Winnipeg radio numbers (Fall 2012)
As you may be aware, BBM made their
radio ratings data public last week and we reported their
market share numbers. With the market share data, we
constructed a graph that will help understand which broadcasting
companies are doing well at keeping their listeners locked to their
stations.
More Ottawa radio numbers (Fall 2012)
With the BBM ratings of Ottawa radio stations
released last week, Canadian Media Ratings reported the
numbers, but we wanted to do more with the data. Ottawa-Gatineau has a wide range of
radio stations, close to the same number as the Greater Toronto Area.
Since the nation's capital is being served by many different radio stations, the market is very competitive. The
following shows the total number of hours of Ottawa-Gatineau Anglophone listeners split up by media
company:

Ottawa Fall 2012 radio ratings
BBM has revised
its bi-annual Ottawa-Gatineau radio ratings from earlier this morning.
The Fall 2012, September 3 - October 28, numbers are market shares of
Anglophone listeners (in percentage):

Grey Cup Most Watched on English language TV
From TSN's press release:
Preliminary overnight data from BBM Canada confirms that the 100th GREY CUP delivered an average audience of 5.5 million viewers on TSN, making it the most-watched CFL championship game ever recorded on English-language television.*
Meanwhile, an average audience of 5.8 million watched the 100th GREY CUP on TSN and RDS, marking a 28% increase in viewers compared to last year and earning an incredible national 16.1 rating. Audiences jumped even higher for younger viewers, with a 38% increase among A18-34.

Numbers on the 99th Grey Cup
The 100th Grey Cup is being played today in Toronto featuring the Toronto Argonauts and is expecting a large TV audience in Canada's biggest television market. Last year, the match took place in Vancouver with 4.6 million viewers staring at television screens across the country. Highest rated program was CSI on CTV with 1.939 million viewers.
Highest rated Canadian show was Dragons' Den on CBC with 1.311 million viewers.
While CTV shows beat most of its competition, The X-Factor does lose to Survivor on Global.

Watching political satire on U.S. election night
Thanks to Bill Brioux's tweet on the ratings of The Daily Show & Colbert Report on U.S. election night, this table was possible:

One thing that stood out is Colbert's audience (170,000) is less than half of Stewart's (374,000) on the same network, CTV. Without any previous data to compare, it's difficult to say why this is the case. One possible reason for this is some viewers may have switched from the fake news to the real news as they waited for Romney to concede, which he did at 12:55 a.m. with 12 minutes left in Colbert's show.
