Popular TV shows sorted by genre

Using the same TV audience data from BBM Canada for the 22nd to 28th of October, we added the genre of each show to help us understand what types of shows are popular. Below, this graph shows the number of popular programs by genre:

Drama leads with 16 programs, while comedy and reality trail behind with six and five respectively.

Now, let's take a look at some audience levels for each genre:

So, how does one interpret this graph? Remember, these are not individual viewers. A single viewer may watch two shows of the Big Bang and watch the news, so they are counted as three viewers.

Since there are no NHL games to be shown, the sports category is, as expected, non-existent. Last year's Hockey Night in Canada Game 1, which was the sole sports program to make the Top 30 in the October 24-30 period, attracted 2.294 million viewers for that week.

The size of the drama audience (26.815 million) is double the number of comedy viewers (12.451 million). Keep in mind that there are 16 dramas and 6 comedies. Last year at this time, there were 14 dramas garnering a total of 24.3 million viewers and 6 comedies viewed by 11.3 million people.

All viewership figures are from BBM Canada.
