Note: The viewership number for 2004 is
a conservative estimate based on a CBC document listing the audience
size as “at least 4 million.”
Over the past 10 years, the Grey Cup
television audience has varied in size and were forced to switch from
a public broadcaster to a private broadcaster, a specialty channel.
While these numbers are from the past, they may be worth looking at today.
In 2004, CBC had its highest Grey Cup
viewership (from 2002-2007), which was the same year as the NHL
lockout. When the NHL returned the following year, Grey Cup
viewership dropped by over 800 000 viewers or by 20%. The absence or
presence of an NHL season is only one factor though and therefore,
isn't entirely responsible for such fluctuations.
When TSN took the CFL broadcast rights
from CBC in 2008, initially, audience size shrank by nearly 900, 000.
Perhaps, the recession had an effect on Grey Cup viewership. The next
year, audience size doubled, which is remarkable. For the next few
years, the audience remained relatively high compared to CBC. That's
quite the feat for a speciality channel.
