NHL returns, Hockey Night sees record audiences

Turns out NHL fans forgot that they had a plan to boycott NHL games on TV. Fans returned in huge numbers while breaking audience records for Hockey Night in Canada's afternoon and East games. And CBC exhales. The Globe and Mail reports:

The Saturday afternoon matchup between the Ottawa Senators and Winnipeg Jets grabbed 1,930,000 viewers (aged 2+) on average, up 36 per cent from the previous record of 1,094,000 (set on Feb. 11, 2011). Citing data from the TV ratings service BBM Canada, CBC said the figure represented a 156 per cent rise from the same weekend last year, when a mid-season game pulled in only 588,000.

When most of us had our TV sets turned off during the holidays, these are the shows that everyone else were watching: news programs, holiday movies. No American reality shows. No American comedies.

Five out of the six most watched TV programs during the Christmas break were either CTV or Global news.

Earlier in the week, ratings for each of the World Junior Hockey round robin games were released which provides us with more insight.
