TV audience numbers over Fall 2012

Every week, BBM publishes reports of the most watched TV programs in the country and many of them were posted on this blog. With the TV viewership figures of these popular shows, let's see how our viewing habits have varied over the course of the Fall TV period.

To do that, for each (weekly) measured audience period, the average number of viewers is determined for the Top 30 TV shows in the country in that 7-day time frame and the averages are displayed in this chart:

Viewership in mid September rose by 20% as the season premieres of Canadian shows like Rick Mercer Report, Dragons' Den were aired and a week later, the average audience size grew by 32% as Big Bang Theory and Flashpoint season premieres were shown.

After the rush of season premieres, average audience dropped by 12% into October. In this month, there are fewer season premieres and viewership remained more steady through November with, at most, a five-percent weekly change.

As the holidays approached, TV networks roll out fewer new episodes of their hit shows and Canadians spend far less time staring at the tube. The average audience size decreased on Christmas and Boxing week by 44% from the previous week. If the NHL had games in December, the drop in viewers would not likely have been as large.

The growth and drops in viewership seem predictable enough every time new episodes are being aired or not being aired. Or when we are on holidays.
