Weekly Top 30 TV Shows (December 17-23); NCIS takes #1 spot

BBM released its latest weekly list of Top 30 TV programs watched by Canadians. This is their rankings for the period of December 17 to 23:

Notes: Viewership is the average minute audience.
Notes from BBM Canada: "This chart shows the Top 30 TV programs for all national networks and Canadian English specialty networks for the week indicated. Programs are ranked based on their AMA...The chart also indicates the broadcast outlet on which the program aired and the program’s start and end time (shown in Eastern Time)." Demographic: All Persons 2+.

Overnight estimate of the X-Factor finale was 1.829 million, but the final estimate is now 1.937 million, which is still less than last year's audience of 2.002 million.

The Voice finale had an early estimate of 1.388 million, but the final estimate has an audience size much larger at 1.572 million, a 13.7% increase from last year.

Since the start of the fall season, new airings of the Big Bang Theory held the #1 spot except when the Grey Cup was played. On the week before Christmas, there was no new episode of the Big Bang, which allowed NCIS to claim the top spot that week with 2.727 million viewers. There must be some sort of celebrations going on at Global as their shows ranked first, second, and third in viewers. All three shows on Global were each watched by at least two million Canadians at any given minute. In previous weeks, CTV has held the top spots with popular American comedies or reality shows.

As the holidays approached, fewer new episodes of popular shows were being aired allowing more newscasts and holiday movies to appear on the Top 30 chart that week.

All four CTV Newscasts made the list, while Global local and national news both crack the top 30. Even with the more popular shows being on hiatus, not a single CBC newscast had over 754,000 viewers.

The CTV Sunday Movie on December 23 was the Sound of Music and it continued to be a family favourite during the holiday season as it garnered an audience of 1.123 million.

Wednesday's movie on CBC was Santa Clause 3 which attracted 884,000 viewers. Santa Clause and Santa Clause 2 each attracted 754,000 viewers.

In a rare appearance, YTV cracks the Top 30 chart with the premiere of Home Alone 5, a made for TV movie. Surprisingly, 835,000 were curious enough to see whether a fifth Home Alone was necessary.

Discovery also makes a rare appearance with the American reality show Gold Rush.

Entertainment news show etalk, which airs on Monday through Thursday, makes the list with 767,000 viewers.
